Mass. Public Transportation: Higher Fares Causes Boycott

The Boston Herald reports:
Relentless hikes in T fares are spurring disgruntled commuters to boycott buses and subways, leading to a 2.3 percent drop in ridership - or 8.7 million rides - over the last fiscal year, according to a Herald review of MBTA data.

“Even if I could afford it, I wouldn’t pay it,” said Lisa Edwards, 45, or Roxbury. ”I’ve had enough.”

General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas this week said the T has reluctantly raised fares three times in the past six years to close the agency’s budget gap and pay down its $5.1 billion debt.
Great moments in public transportation.
