Left-Wing Democratic Socialist Has Ambivalence on the Fourth

My five-year-old wanted to know why we don't have a big American flag flying in front of our house. After all, her bike was festooned with them. I kind of like seeing the big flags in front of fellow progressives' houses--along with peace signs and anti-war placards. But I can't get over the feeling that what that flag represents is not what I want to display. I think about my neighbors from other countries, and how our patriotic display might look to them.

Maybe a United Nations flag would make Ruth Conniff feel better.
