Archdiocese Says Churches and Schools Face Closing

The New York Times reports:
Roman Catholic officials have recommended that some three dozen parishes be closed and a dozen schools shuttered as part of a sweeping reorganization of the Archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Edward M. Egan, the archbishop, revealed in a column published this week.

The recommendations also include the creation of a few new parishes or enlarging existing churches in the northern region of the archdiocese. The proposals, which have long been in the offing, reflect the changing demographics of the metropolitan area as Catholic faithful have largely moved out of parts of New York City and into the suburbs.
The Catholic Church responds to demographics unlike public education.
