The new movie “Mary” (2024 on Netflix) presents versions of the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity and Presentation and surrounding events - somewhat lacking in traditional and biblical accuracy - that left me wanting to revisit the glorious depiction of Our Lady and those joyful mysteries in Zeffirelli’s masterpiece “Jesus of Nazareth” (1977). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_AcCnGGpyE Further, the miraculous script for these events from the actual words of St. Mary, St. Elizabeth and the Angels was already written by St. Luke.
“Mary” has some fantastical scenes with Gabriel and Satan in hoodies vying for Mary’s attention. Another over-the-top scene has Satan appearing in Bethlehem and attempting to carry-off Mary. Joseph runs them down and stabs Satan in the back with a sword. At this point the movie has devolved into a “Gods of Egypt” style sensationalism of the Holy Family. I won’t spoil the rest but I’m pretty sure the Holy Family wasn’t riding around on horses and fighting with soldiers. But let’s look on the bright side. If the movie “Mary” serves as a catalyst for those who will seek the actual history and mysteries of Jesus, St. Mary, St. Joseph, the Bible and Christianity then most certainly watch this movie.
