Last week, Emanuel called for a 20 to 30 cent per gallon increase in the state gas tax, which would mean higher fuel prices, to pay for infrastructure projects. Illinois last raised its gasoline tax in 1990. But that doesn’t mean motorists have been getting a deal for the last 28 years. Drivers already pay an 18.4 cent per gallon federal gas tax and a 19 cent per gallon state tax. On top of that, purchasing gas in Chicago comes with a city motor fuel tax, a Cook County motor fuel tax and the highest-in-the-nation 10.25 percent sales tax. Many suburban municipalities and counties have added and increased gas taxes as well.Government greed on display.
Only a handful of states add sales taxes at the pump — and Illinois is one of them. What does it all mean? Even when gas prices are low, about one-third of what Illinois consumers pay at the pump goes to taxes.
