Mixed with anger, shock and confusion, residents of this city in Contra Costa County said they opposed the detention of thousands of immigrants looking to obtain asylum in the United States and again criticized the administration for separating families at the U.S.-Mexico border.
“It’s not right, what they want to do,” said Jorge Fajardo Arroyo, 65, of plans for the detention camp. “Immigrants come here to seek a better life. We’ve seen the poverty in Mexico and Central America. They come here to succeed.”
The U.S. Navy is considering converting the city’s Naval Weapons Facility into a detention camp to hold up to 47,000 immigrants apprehended at the southern border, according to a draft memo obtained Friday by TIME.
