The Democrat governor said New York would join a lawsuit against the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development for suspending one of ex-President Barack Obama's anti-segregation initiatives: a requirement that municipalities receiving HUD grants report local segregation patterns and propose corrective measures every five years. In January, HUD Secretary Ben Carson, who has dismissed the policy as "social engineering," announced the agency would no longer require the studies.
Cuomo, who led the federal agency under former President Bill Clinton, slammed that decision as "repugnant" and "un-American." The lawsuit he is joining against it was filed by activist groups.
