She Left Harvard. He Got to Stay. Did the university’s handling of one professor’s sexual-harassment complaint keep other women from coming forward for decades?

Karl remembers the look of shock on Sidney Verba’s face when she told him about Domínguez’s behavior the night of the Caldera dinner. The slave comment, the groping in the car. Karl went to see Verba, the associate dean for undergraduate education, after some of her friends encouraged her to get Harvard’s administration involved. She hoped Verba would be an ally. He had been the chair of the government department when Karl was hired, and she believed he wanted to bring more women into the department. He told her he believed her, but was afraid others would not. Domínguez had a reputation as an honorable family man and a good teacher. That's when she understood, as she later put it, "I am in real trouble."
