As part of the budget, Malloy is also proposing establishing highway tolls in Connecticut for the first time in three decades and raising the gasoline tax by 7 cents per gallon over four years.Government greed on display.
“I would say that our proposal to put significantly more resources into transportation ultimately is going to have a very positive effect on real-estate values in the state,’’ Barnes said. “I think that ultimately the real estate value is going to be tied to the attractiveness of Connecticut as a place to live and that addressing our transportation infrastructure, maintaining it, and growing it in key ways is going to be the most important thing we can do to assure our state’s attractiveness and real estate values.’’
Rep. Nicole Klarides-Ditria, a Seymour Republican, questioned Malloy’s plan to impose of fee of $3 per tire, which would raise an estimated $8 million per year, starting July 1.
She said that Connecticut would be at a competitive disadvantage because the surrounding states of New York and Massachusetts do not have tire taxes. In addition, she said that Connecticut’s rate would be the highest in the nation among 29 states that impose tire taxes — above the second highest in Ilinois at $2.50 per tire.
“So this is yet another tax for our residents of the state of Connecticut that can’t afford any more taxes,’’ Klarides-Ditria said.
