Less than half of California public school students demonstrated proficiency in math and English on statewide standardized tests this year, according to data from the state Department of Education.The struggles of government schools.
More than 3.2 million students took the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests this year, with results overall flat compared to last year.
Statewide, English proficiency declined slightly from 49 percent in 2016 to 48.56 percent this year, while the percentage of students demonstrating proficiency in math ticked up from 37 percent to 37.53 percent.
In response, school officials tended to emphasize improvements over time, noting that scores were even lower in 2015.
