Three days after entering a church seeking sanctuary Nury Chavarria came outside to thank a crowd of hundreds, her eyes swelled and her voice soft.Illegal immigration in the news.
"I am so grateful to have this support. I thank everyone who has stood by my side," Chavarria said, standing atop a chair just steps away from the church's doorstep. "I am so thankful for the New Haven community. Thank you."
Chavarria, a single mother of four from Norwalk who entered the United States illegally in 1993, was slated to be deported on Thursday but instead took refuge at the Iglesia De Dios Pentecostal, a church in the Fair Haven section of the city. Her youngest child, Hayley Chavarria, 9, has been at her side since.
On Sunday, the Connecticut Immigrant Rights Alliance hosted a vigil outside the church in support of Chavarria.
Hundreds attended the vigil, including New Haven Mayor Toni Harp, Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling, and musical performers Tina Williams Colon and Las Cafeteras, a band out of Los Angeles.
