The city's official bureau has launched a campaign in Mexico to try and win back tourists put off by President Donald Trump's rhetoric toward the country.The struggles of Blue America.
NYC & Company, the city's tourism arm, has joined forces with Mexico City's Ministry of Tourism to boost potential travelers' enthusiasm about visiting the Big Apple. Billboards and bus shelters in Mexico's capital will proclaim New York City "le da la bienvenida al mundo," welcoming the world.
The encouragement is needed. In 2016, 449,000 tourists visited New York from Mexico, making it one of the top 10 contributors of foreign tourists to the city. But recent projections forecast a more than 6% decline in Mexican tourists to New York in 2017, a turnaround from recent years' increases.
That number is an adjustment from projections a month before the presidential election that visits from Mexico and many other nations would grow. Oxford Economics, which conducts modeling and forecasting for NYC & Company, revisited the forecast in January and February and found a sharp reversal of tourist interest in the city.
