Muslim Cleric Who Had 130 Wives Dies Aged 93

Heat Street reports:

A Muslim cleric who became notorious in Nigeria for marrying at least 130 women has died aged 93, leaving behind more than 200 children and dozens of widows.

Mohammed Bello Abubakar died in Niger on Saturday after an illness. Some of his widows are thought to be pregnant. Ten of his marriages ended in divorce.

According to the BBC, a large crowd attended his funeral on Sunday.

In 2008 Abubakar faced criticism from other Muslim preachers who demanded that he divorce 82 of his then-86 wives within 48 hours. However, the cleric said at the time that it was his ‘divine’ mission to keep marrying.

Speaking to the BBC in 2008, he said: “A man with ten wives would collapse and die, but my own power is given by Allah. That is why I have been able to control 86 of them.”
