Over the last several days, a former Miss Universe named Alicia Machado has become front and center in the 2016 presidential campaign. While it’s certainly unusual that so much attention is being devoted to a former beauty pageant contestant in a race for leader of the free world, the focus on Machado is pretty much the perfect microcosm of the 2016 campaign.Imagine that.
It’s not accidental that we are talking about Machado: This was orchestrated by the Clinton campaign. It’s not by chance that Clinton brought her up at the end of Monday night’s debate or that she talked about how Trump had made fun of her weight by calling her Miss Piggy or of her Latina heritage by calling her “Miss Housekeeping.” And it certainly wasn’t by chance that she said Machado, who has become an American citizen, will be voting this fall.
The Clinton campaign had already cut an ad with her.
