Mr. Bevin hammered away at all this, promising to shutter Kynect, hand the mess back to a federal exchange, and limit the Medicaid expansion. The Republican Governors Association dropped a late $2.5 million ad blitz on ObamaCare, quoting Mr. Conway as saying he “would have been proud to vote for” the bill had he been in Washington. Other ads tagged Mr. Conway for continuing to support a law that is “hurting Kentucky families” and for failing as Attorney General to join the national lawsuit against ObamaCare.Barack Obama is "centerist" Democrat: no matter was the MSM tells you.
Democrats bet that public anger toward their health takeover would fade with time, but five years after ObamaCare’s passage and two years post-rollout, opposition is as strong as ever. The issue was potent enough to overcome Mr. Bevin’s underfunded campaign, in which he was hit for inconsistent positions and outspent by some $3 million.
The coal-state Republican was also helped by opposition to Mr. Obama’s hostility to fossil fuels, and social conservative anger over the recent jailing of state clerk Kim Davis for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
Tuesday’s results continued the Obama-era trend of Democrats getting walloped at the state level. Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe failed to pick up the single seat he needed to retake the state Senate back from Republicans, despite record spending. Mississippi Republican Governor Phil Bryant was easily re-elected and nearly swept in a supermajority in the legislature. Democrats will now hold a mere 17 governorships—down from 29 in 2008.
