It’s perhaps a kid’s worst nightmare: A school day without end.Of course , Chicago public schools still aren't good enough for Rahm Emanuel's children.
But that’s, in part, what Mayor Rahm Emanuel predicted as he announced a new $38 million federal technology grant Tuesday.
“It will allow Chicago Public Schools — every school — to be fully wired to the level of the 21st Century, and schools that have old technology, to upgrade that technology to the highest speed,” Emanuel said, appearing with CPS CEO Forrest Claypool at Dawes Elementary on the South Side.
The upgrades, made possible by a Federal Communications Commission grant, are expected to be in place by the start of the 2016-17 school year, according to the mayor’s office. More than 500 schools are expected to be “modernized” under the plan.
Emanuel said he visited with FCC officials five times during the last two years in order to secure the funds.
