Cabbies file lawsuit claiming wheelchair accessible taxis are causing them to lose money to Uber

The New York Daily News reports:
A group of cabbies say they can’t afford to drive a wheelchair accessible taxi while losing business to Uber, according to a federal suit.

Medallions for the accessible taxis are worth less, while the cars themselves cost more to maintain, retrofit with wheelchair lifts and cover gas and repair costs, according to the federal suit filed Tuesday from three drivers and the NYC Cab Drivers Association, which reps independent and fleet medallion owners.

With these added costs, taxi drivers who bought pricey medallions are going to lose money as Uber continues to ride city streets without any mandate to provide service to disabled New Yorkers, the suit charged.

“It undermines their ability to earn a living,” said the attorney for the drivers, Dan Ackman

“No Uber driver has any responsibility whatsoever,” he added.
