Anti-Semitism resolution stirs dissent in California State Legislature

The Sacramento Bee reports:
A resolution that would encourage each University of California campus to pass its own resolution condemning anti-Semitism and racism, SCR 35, comes up for a hearing in the Assembly’s Higher Education committee today. Despite its non-binding nature, the resolution-engendering resolution has sparked a healthy debate.

The opposition largely centers around the definition of anti-Semitism used in the legislative resolution, which comes from the U.S. State Department. Critics say the definition is so broad that it could discourage debate on Israel’s behavior in the Middle East. Opposing the resolution are Jewish Voice for Peace, Palestine Legal and the Center for Constitutional Rights, among a handful of others.
