Killing ObamaCare Subsidies Could Benefit Millions, Study Finds

IBD reports:

a new report co-authored by Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office who now heads up the American Action Forum, says that these critics are looking at only one side of the equation. Even if Congress does nothing to restore those subsidies, millions could benefit in other ways.

First, keep in mind that the claim that 8 million will lose insurance assumes that everyone who loses subsidies in the federal exchange would cancel their health plans.

But since roughly three-quarters of those enrolled through the HealthCare.gov site paid for insurance all on their own before ObamaCare, it's a safe bet that many will continue to purchase coverage without the taxpayers' help.

Plus, as the AAF paper explains, people in those states would be eligible to enroll in low-cost catastrophic plans, something that they can't do now without also paying the individual mandate penalty.
