Crain's Chicago Business reports:
Members of Chicago's City Council have a long tradition of helping family and friends. Which leads to a story about Ald. Pat O'Connor (40th), who is Mayor Rahm Emanuel's City Council floor leader, and a woman who's "volunteered" to be the bookkeeper of his political campaign fund, even writing checks for him.
That would be Mary Ann Roti-Walz, the daughter of the late 1st Ward Ald. Fred Roti and — you knew this was coming — a $65,676-a-year aide to Mr. O'Connor's Committee on Workforce Development.
The story begins with Ms. Roti-Wolz's father, who represented the downtown 1st Ward back in the days when it was known as the political home of organized crime in Chicago. Mr. Roti was convicted of 11 counts of racketeering, bribery and extortion in 1990 and sentenced to time in federal prison
But he also was known for something else: Being the best job generator for him and his that possibly could be imagined.
At one point, Mr. Roti helped arranged for no fewer than 16 members of his family to be on the city payroll at the same time, collectively earning a nifty $377,000 in 1981, when $377k was serious money. Asked about it then, Mr. Roti — unlike today's politicians, he'd at least answer questions — replied, "So what? They're all doing their jobs.:"
There's more:
someone who doesn't like Mr. O'Connor pointed me to a recent disclosure filed by his political campaign fund, Citizens for O'Connor. And there indeed is a letter (see page 2) and a $1,750 refund check to a contributor who'd contributed more than allowed by law, both signed by, um, Mary Ann Roti-Walz.
Mr. O'Connor confirms that Ms. Roti-Walz effectively is the bookkeeper for his his campaign fund. Though the fund lists someone else as treasurer and hires an outside accountant, "she basically handles the books for it," he said. "She basically keeps us in compliance."
Alderman Fred Roti was
named by the U.S. Attorney General as a "high ranking made member" of the Chicago Mob, not once but
twice. For more on this subject , click on
