A number of taxpayers will be taking next Friday off by choice. It is, after all, the day before the Memorial Day weekend begins – the perfect time to grab an extra day. But what if you were forced to take the day off as an unpaid furlough day? That is the plan for the entire IRS workforce: nearly 100,000 workers. On Friday, May 24, 2013, the IRS will shut down completely and taxpayers and practitioners will not have access to IRS resources. On those days, calls will not be answered, no returns will be processed or refunds issued and all IRS offices will be closed.
