Flashback 1969: Powerful Alderman Ed Burke Dodges The Draft

Flashback July 23, 1969 from the Chicago Tribune:
Ald. Edward M. Burke [14th] won't be drafted after all.

Officials said yesterday the 26-year old south side alderman has avoided two years of active duty by being accepted into a Chicago army reserve unit commanded by a friend, Eugene F. Welter, an attorney with offices at 33 N. La Salle st.
The Chicago Machine can do wonders for white guys with connections. No wonder the Vietnam War is a sensitive subject with Alderman Burke.
