UAW worker criticized for Right to Work views

An hourly autoworker from Shelby Township is under fire from fellow UAW members at the Ford Axle Plant in Sterling Heights over his outspoken, public support of Right to Work laws.

Brian Pannebecker, 53, is labeled a “hypocrite” and urged to resign from the union in anonymously handwritten remarks accompanying photocopies of a letter to the editor criticizing him, posted around the plant.

“This happens virtually every time I get a letter published,” he said.

Pannebecker has spent his entire 16 years at Ford on the assembly line. A conservative Republican, he has spoken at Tea Party rallies, is an advocate for Michigan Freedom to Work where he hopes to be elected soon as an officer, and believes workers shouldn’t be forced to join organized labor because of its traditional support for Democrats.

“What I’m advocating for is right to work; give each individual the choice whether to join a union and pay union dues,” he said. “I’m not anti-union. What I’m against is the behavior of unions, the union bosses and how they operate politically.”
