Chicago to pay millions to victims of police

UPI reports:
The city of Chicago says it will give nearly $4 million to compensate victims of police wrongdoing under several settlements approved by city aldermen.

The need to compensate victims, including families of two people who died in police custody after their pleas for medical help were ignored, because of improper action by police and jail staff angered some aldermen, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday.

"If this is indicative of a pattern of conduct, then there has to be in-service training for officers and civilian aides assigned to these detention facilities or the Red Cross or some independent agency needs to be brought in to make periodic evaluations," said Alderman Edward Burke, chairman of the council's Finance Committee.

Yet some people in Chicago think only the police should have guns.
