Illinois' bid to collect sales taxes on Internet shopping comes up empty

Crain's Chicago Business reports:
Illinois isn't having much luck patching the $169-million leak in state coffers from Internet sales taxes that go uncollected.

It tried the honor system, with a reminder on income tax forms to prod individual taxpayers to pay up. Though compliance doubled, just 4.6% of taxpayers did so, paying $10.2 million.

Getting Internet retailers to collect sales taxes from customers doesn't look any more promising.

Taxes have consequences.
