4000 Charter school backers rally to be heard

The Chicago Tribune reports:
About 4,000 Chicago charter school supporters crowded into the UIC Pavilion on Saturday, a show of strength in the face of efforts by the teachers union to curb growth of the movement.

Beating drums and waving noisemakers, parents, teachers and students chanted "We deserve more!" while wearing different-hued T-shirts from about 60 schools that washed the arena in a sea of color.

The rally — billed as the first gathering of many of the city's charter supporters — was organized partly in response to a push by the teachers union in January to block new charter applicants at Chicago Public Schools.
