More than 1,000 angry teachers encircled the block holding the Chicago Board of Education Wednesday, chanting “Rahm Emanuel has got to go,” just as Emanuel’s hand-picked school board members prepared for their first monthly meeting. With 200 half empty Chicago Public schools: Rahm Emanuel will be telling 1000 teachers they must go.
The throng — as many as five deep — wound around the entire block, stopping morning traffic and urging drivers with their signs to “honk if you support teachers.” As a result, blaring car horns often accompanied chanting protesters.
Teachers were on the attack against “corporate greed” they say has robbed the system of the money it could use to cover scheduled 4 percent raises for the Chicago Teachers Union and other unionized school workers worth $100 million. Marching to the Bank of America, teachers demanded that BOA and other banks compensate the system for $35 million in “toxic” interest rate swaps.
