Chicago Has 200 Public Schools With 50% Enrollment Capacity

The Chicago Tribune reports on Chicago's inefficient public school system:
The district is planning to conduct a comprehensive review of school facilities, which according to some experts will reveal that Chicago has more than 200 school buildings that are enrolled at less than 50 percent capacity. However, closing or merging schools always creates controversy.

Graduation rates have improved from 47 percent to about 56 percent over the last decade, but by almost every measure the vast majority of Chicago schools are failing to prepare students for college. In a sobering assessment of CPS, Emanuel's transition team on education determined that less than 10 percent of CPS students who enter high school receive a bachelor's degree by age 25.
Just a reminder the next time you hear Barack Obama or some progressive talk about public education as an "investment"!
