Retired city workers have received $73.5 million in bonus checks over the past 27 years under a policy that requires the San Diego pension system to make the payments in years with higher investment returns. They sure are special!
The dollar amounts of the individual checks are not eye-popping, like the $299,000 paid per year to the city’s top pensioner. The year-end bonus checks top out at $2,092 and average $757.
Given to 6,700 retirees, the benefit adds up.
