Now, in the first wide-open race in more than two decades, the question has re-emerged for mayoral candidates — are Chicago's public schools good enough for their children?
In practical terms, the only major candidate facing that question is Rahm Emanuel, whose school-age children attend private school in Washington.
Even as he advocated improving Chicago Public Schools by investing more in teacher development on Tuesday, Emanuel would not commit to sending his children to public schools, saying he first needs to talk to his wife.
"I'm not saying I'm not. I'm not saying what I'm going to do," he said. "I'll be deciding this with my own family."
