In House Victories, Republicans Oust Old and New Democrats Alike

The New York Times reports:
Republicans captured the House Tuesday by ousting powerful Democratic committee chairmen as well as newcomers who faced a voter backlash after supporting an aggressive Democratic legislative agenda for the past two years.

The dozens of Democrats who lost in the economically struggling Midwest include Representative Ike Skelton of Missouri, who heads the Armed Services Committee. Mr. Skelton was joined in defeat by Representative John M. Spratt Jr. of South Carolina, the chairman of the Budget Committee.

Republicans, who returned to power in the House after four years of Democratic control, won at least 56 seats held by Democrats. They swept away veterans in Indiana, Florida, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia, and they defeated freshmen lawmakers, too, as they staked their claim to the House majority two years into the Obama administration.
