The longest-serving and most powerful alderman on the Chicago City Council, Ed Burke (14th) said Monday that whoever Chicago’s next mayor is, he or she will have to accept a less powerful role than Mayor Daley — even if the next mayor is Rahm Emanuel.
“Nobody’s gonna run over the City Council,” Burke said. “I think it’s a new day. The members will recognize that Chicago is a strong council-weak mayor form of government; not that they’re going to be obstructionist, but they are going to increasingly seek to re-establish the traditional separation of powers balance between the legislative and executive branches.”
