Young people today are surprisingly disinterested in driving. In 1978, half of 16-year-olds, three-quarters of 17-year-olds and 92 percent of 19-year-olds had driver's licenses. Today those percentages are 31, 49 and 77, respectively. Motorists ages 21 to 30 logged 13.7 percent of total miles driven in the U.S. last year, compared to 20.8 percent in 1995.
