Stimulus Money: Chicago to spend $25 million to fight school violence

The Chicago Sun-Times reports:
Chicago’s public schools will use $25 million in federal economic stimulus funds to expand the reach of three programs aimed at combating school violence, Mayor Daley announced today.

The first $10 million will be spent on mentoring 1,500 high-risk students at 13 high schools across the city.

Another $10 million will be spent to extend what schools chief Ron Huberman called a “culture of calm” at 38 high-risk high schools. Students at those schools will be given instruction in behaviorial management, leadership training and conflict resolution.

And another $4.7 million will establish a school community watch program in 13 high schools identied by the Chicago Police Department as having high crime and active gang conflicts.
Great moments in public education and Keynesian economics!
