Now that the graduation ceremonies and parties are over, the valley's latest crop of college grads faces the cold reality of job hunting in year two of the Great Recession. No word from Obama on this story.
New graduates say the competition is fierce. But university officials are seeing signs that companies plan to increase hiring from the depths of last year.
The job market is "terrible," said Sarah Jeffcoat, 22, a Santa Clara University graduating senior in political science and international relations.
"Only one of my close friends has an actual job, at Google," said Jeffcoat, who plans to return to her home in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Two of her friends are joining the Peace Corps, another is teaching English in France, and two have Fulbright scholarships.
"The people who are getting jobs are in business or engineering," she said.
