The Chicago Tribune reports:
A federal judge signaled today he expects to deny an effort by lawyers for the City of Chicago to block testimony by 10 current or former aldermen at the upcoming bribery trial of a developer. But the judge said he still had to decide the relevance of the testimony.
U.S. District Judge Robert Dow said he will deliver an opinion in writing as soon as tomorrow.
Lawyers for developer Calvin Boender, who is accused of bribing former Ald. Isaac "Ike" Carothers, have subpoenaed 10 current or former aldermen to testify about their knowledge of how Boender's development, Galewood Yards, won approval from the city.
There's more:
Five of the subpoenaed aldermen were on the city's Zoning Committee when Galewood Yards was approved. They were Aldermen Ed Burke, Eugene Schulter, Ed Smith and Bernard Stone as well as former Alderman William J. P. Banks. Also subpoenaed were Aldermen Emma Mitts, Walter Burnett, Ricardo Munoz, Patrick J. O'Connor and Helen Shiller.
