The Chicago Tribune reports:
Wearing dark sunglasses and a long gray coat, former Cicero President Betty Loren-Maltese arrived at a Chicago halfway house today after her release from prison for her role in a scheme that bilked town coffers of more than $12 million.
Loren-Maltese declined to respond to repeated questions from a throng of reporters and photographers as she arrived shortly after noon at the Salvation Army halfway house at 105 S. Ashland Ave.
Here's the
press release from the Department of Justice years ago in which U.S. Attorney Scott Lassar is quoted :
"By disguising transfers from the town as insurance payments, the defendants successfully looted the Town of Cicero of millions of dollars," Mr. Lassar said. "They used their mob connections to turn Cicero into their personal piggy bank."
Imagine that.
