Guy who scammed Chicago gets $11M in city business

The Chicago Sun-Times reports:
Body shop owner John Szybkowski once submitted a slew of phony bills to the City of Chicago for work on police cars.

He kicked back some of his illegal profits to city employees.

And he lied to a grand jury to cover it up, the feds alleged.

So what did the city do?

It gave him more than $11 million in new business.

Szybkowski, now in his 60s, was sentenced to three years in prison in 1981 for his role in one of the worst scandals in Chicago Police history.

Fifteen people -- including the son of then-Ald. Fred Roti, a made member of the Chicago mob -- were charged in the multimillion- dollar scheme. At the time, it was described as the biggest financial fraud ever discovered in the department. A key part of the scam involved Police Department employees approving fake work orders for police vehicles and getting kickbacks in return.
Do you think if Mayor Daley and Alderman Burke wanted to put a stop to this they would? Anyway, for a broader look at Alderman Roti, Alderman Burke, and Mayor Daley. For a look at Alderman Burke's favor to the Chicago Mob. For a look at when Mayor Daley campaigned for Mayor with "made member" of the Chicago Mob Fred Roti. For a look at when the U.S. Attorney General called Fred Roti a made member of the Chicago Mob in 1991.
