Bid to rig crime stats

The New York Post reports:
A posse of "drugstore cowboys" at the Port Authority Bus Terminal -- renegade PA police supervisors worried about unflattering crime statistics -- have scared Duane Reade security guards into not reporting shoplifting incidents, sources say.

To keep the unflattering figures low, the rogue PA bosses have successfully used a stealth campaign of threats and intimidation to convince the security guards to stop pressing larceny complaints against shoplifters they catch red-handed at the store in the terminal, sources have told The Post.

"There have been multiple incidents where we were told to charge [suspects] only with trespassing, not shoplifting," said a Duane Reade guard who asked that his name not be printed.

The monopolist wants to report good numbers on itself.
