Companies that produce large amounts of greenhouse gases will have to pay new state fees under a decision made Friday - a key step in California's far-reaching program aimed at slowing global climate change.
Right now the fees affect only about 350 companies, but experts say they are an important move in averting some of the most catastrophic possible results of climate change.
