A groundbreaking took place Saturday for one of 10 Chicago public schools that will open over the next couple of years. All this since losing 41,000 school kids since 2001. You might say public education in Chicago is a racket to enrich unions and building contractors. Still, no word yet on why Barack Obama and Mayor Daley didn't want their children to experience the magic of the Chicago Public schools.
Mayor Daley joined other officials at the site of Brighton Park School on the Southwest Side. The three-story, high-tech, environmentally friendly building will serve 900 students in 30 classrooms.
Daley said excellent schools are the best gifts he can give to children.
"Once they get a good, quality education, they have the tools for life. They never have to depend off of anyone. If you have an education, you have independence," the mayor said.
