Broward Teachers Union sues to stop new teacher hires

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports:
The Broward Teachers Union sued the Broward School District today to stop hiring new teachers until it gets the names, assignments and certifications of the laid-off teachers who have been rehired.

School Board members voted in June to lay off nearly 400 teachers, though the school district has recalled at least 124 to fill teaching jobs with the school district. But the district is also hiring 89 teachers for vacancies that they say the teachers on the layoff list aren’t qualified to fill.

The union says it requested the recalled teachers’ names, certifications and assignments on July 2, and has not yet received it, triggering the lawsuit. BTU needs that information to make sure all the rehired teachers are being placed correctly so that the maximum number of laid-off teachers can be placed into new jobs, said union spokesman John Ristow.
Great moments in public education.
