Mary Schmich probably hasn't noticed that Amtrak doesn't make a profit.Promoting trains is kind of like promoting the Chicago Tribune to people under 30.Maybe, if the Chicago Tribune focused in on tea parties or Chicago corruption people might take them more seriously.Heh,maybe Sam Zell wants to get into that unprofitable business of high speed trains.
When Barack Obama announced details of a national plan for faster trains on Thursday, I immediately thought about sex.
I'm referring to an episode of "Sex and the City," in which Carrie and Samantha decide to travel from New York to San Francisco the slow, romantic way, via rail.
The train is slow all right, but as the ladies discover in dismay, the sleeper cabin is barely bigger than a SmartCar, the beds resemble two-by-fours, and the toilet is under the shower head. So much for romance.
That episode symbolizes what's been wrong with American train travel for way too long. The thrill is gone. The old glamor has vanished, and the typical train offers little of the modern efficiency that would make the ride worth the trouble.
But if President Obama has his way, we're about to leap into modern times—and that's as thrilling as bungee-jumping.
