Government buying surplus walnuts

The San Francisco Chronicle reports:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that it will buy $30 million of California walnuts for federal food nutrition assistance programs, not only a health benefit but a gift to growers who had produced a record harvest and seen prices tumble.

The government also said it is purchasing turkey, pork and lamb, which, like walnuts, are sectors struggling due to depressed market conditions.
The federal government wouldn't want consumers to enjoy lower prices!
