The city of Los Angeles spent nearly $185,000 last year on bottled water, despite a mayoral directive that it should not be provided at the city's expense, according to an audit released today. There aren't many checks and balances for a greedy monopoly.
City Controller Laura Chick found that $184,736 was spent on bottled water in 2008. Instead of purchasing water for special events, the Department of Water and Power encourages city officials to use coolers or pitchers to serve tap water.
