L.A. County spent $12,800 trying to collect $1,000

The L.A. Daily News reports:
Los Angeles County officials spent more than $12,800 in legal fees trying to collect $1,000 from a grandmother who owed money to the county Probation Department, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said today.

The woman's case is set to go to trial Wednesday. The county wants the woman, a Social Security recipient, to pay $25 per month for 40 months. Her lawyer asked Yaroslavsky to get involved.

"This is absurd," the supervisor said.

Though there is a moratorium on making the parents or guardians of juveniles on probation pay for various things, such as incarceration, Yaroslavsky expressed concern that others were also being unfairly billed.
Great moments in Blue America.
