Chicago Wants Big Property Tax Increase For Schools While School Population Declines

The Chicago Sun-Times reports:
A property tax hike may well be needed to fill a projected $475 million Chicago Public School budget deficit — the largest in at least 10 years, CPS officials said Wednesday.

Officials predicted they would not raise class size and doubted teacher layoffs would be necessary.
This all from a school district that's losing population. The Chicago Tribune reported this in January:
Since 2001, enrollment has dropped by more than 40,000 students as gentrification in many neighborhoods pushed families out of the city and into nearby suburbs.
Instead of closing schools, the Chicago Democrats are going to raise high property taxes even higher! Chicago Democrats wouldn't want to layoff too many teachers because that would be less voters demanding higher taxes.
