Bush signs expanded disability bill

USA Today reports:
With his father looking on, President Bush signed legislation Thursday expanding protections afforded by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The original law was enacted in 1990 under President George H.W. Bush. The act ensured that people with disabilities could access public buildings and accommodations, helping them join the workforce.

Courts have generally exempted from the law's anti-discrimination protections those with partial physical disabilities or impairments treatable with medication or devices such as hearing aids.

The new bill directs the courts to use a more generous application of the ADA's definition of disability, making it clear that Congress intended the law's coverage to be broad and to cover anyone facing discrimination because of a disability.
