The Chicago Tribune reports:
A federal jury on Thursday convicted a former supervisory plumbing inspector of attempted extortion in a videotaped sting that saw an underling pass him $500 he thought was coming from a corrupt contractor.
Gregory Toran was found guilty after the jury deliberated for less than three hours. U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman scheduled sentencing for Nov. 13.
Here's the description of Obama's hometown:
In his closing argument, Assistant U.S. Atty. Joseph Alesia told the jury that the case offered a glimpse of typical illegal dealings in Chicago.
"Bribes, payoffs, extortion," he said. "That's how the city works."
