Illinois Smoking Ban Disaster: Elgin casino sees revenue drop nearly 20% for second month

The AP reports:
New figures show that the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin saw receipts drop nearly 20% during February, the second straight month revenues have fallen that much.

Elgin Mayor Ed Schock says bad weather, the economy and the state's January First smoking ban are to blame for the casino's drop in revenue. The mayor says he hopes a smoking exemption for casinos is approved.

Other city officials say they're nervous about the drop. They say the city will have to seriously consider what programs to cut if the drop continues. Elgin received about $24 million from the casino in 2007.

If the casino continues at this pace, receipts for the year would be about $19.7 million.
